Retire into Action

Get Active Week

What began as a small project ten years ago is today a major event, with some 2,000 RSVP volunteers raising funds to provide more than 10,000 housebound and isolated people with a great day out, an opportunity to leave what is often a very restricted environment, and the chance to enjoy the company of other friendly people.

'Get Active Week' takes place during the last week in June each year, but the planning begins months earlier as our volunteers begin to raise the thousands of pounds needed, aided by a 'start-up' grant of £50 from the Home Office for each activity. The week is launched at a Flagship event in a London Hotel where150 guests enjoy afternoon tea and sparkling entertainment attended by the local Mayor and Chelsea Pensioners

Throughout the U.K., boat trips, theatre trips, outings to the seaside, garden centres and museums, tea parties, tea dances, fish and chip suppers, strawberry and cream teas are just a few of the outings enjoyed.

There is also increasing participation in community and intergenerational activities. Working together in brightening up neglected communal areas is not only enjoyable but also helps give a sense of achievement and belonging. Working for the day with the local archaeological society provides the excitement of uncovering the past history of the area in which you live.

One of 'Get Active Week's great supporters is TV presenter and former social worker Paul O'Grady. He said "across the country there are thousands of lonely housebound elderly people who rely on the volunteers to care for them. Many look forward all year to the day out that RSVP's volunteers organise for them."
