Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme

Retire into Action

Education

Older people have a lifetime of skills and experience that can be utilised in both primary and secondary schools, where RSVP has over 4000 volunteers engaging with children in a variety of ways:

  • Many roles are available to volunteers, including paired/group reading, library, numeracy work, art and craft sessions, music, sports & games, storytelling, computer skills etc.
  • Young Enterprise programme - RSVP participates in Young Enterprise programmes mainly in secondary schools, but has now developed a primary YE programme.
  • Role models : many children have no male role model to draw on; others have no experience of employment in the family.
  • Out-of-School and After-School Clubs are another growth opportunity for volunteering.

Reports from schools organisers around the country suggest that on average RSVP schools volunteers have been active with RSVP for 5-6 years, while some having been involved for over 18 years since before RSVP began to coordinate their activities.

Martin Stevenson, the head teacher in a London school, says of the volunteers ...

"The volunteers have been a great asset to the school. The have shown great enthusiasm working with the children and the children, in turn, have benefited greatly from the help and support that they have received. Volunteers have become a part of the school family. More please!"

All volunteers who work in schools will have to be subject to criminal records bureau checks. However, it is important to remember that a criminal record per se does not preclude a volunteer being placed in a school. It depends on many factors.
